Synopsis

Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Beneath (2007)

Synopsis

Not until I watched 2007’s Beneath have I ever felt quite so perplexed by a movie’s production credits. On one hand, we see that Paramount Classics backed the flick. Seems to me that a line called “Classics” implies something serious and dramatic, ala the Merchant-Ivory pictures. But then the credits follow this with a listing for MTV Films, a name that inspires thoughts of light pop culture.

How do the two combine for Beneath? Not well. College student Christy Wescot (Nora Zehetner) has gone through a lot of pain at a young age. Her parents died when she was 11, and her older sister Vanessa (Carly Pope) eventually dies from injuries suffered in a car crash when three years later. To make things worse, 14-year-old Christy (Brenna O’Brien) was driving and caused the wreck.

All of this leaves Christy as something of an emotional basket case, and she finds it tough to maintain a stable life. She encounters remnants of her past when family acquaintance Joseph (Don S. Davis) dies of a heart attack. At the funeral, she reunites with Vanessa’s widower John Locke (Matthew Settle), John’s controlling mother (Gabrielle Rose) and an old friend named Debbie (Nicola Anderson).

Christy also runs into some weirdness when she meets her niece Amy (Jessica Amlee). The youngster confides that a “dark thing” took away Joseph, not an ordinary heart attack. This spooks Christy since she’d suffered from so many haunting visions herself. She’s tormented by thoughts that her sister was buried alive. The movie follows these supernatural threads and other mysterious elements.

I can’t say that I expected much from Beneath, so it would be a mistake to label it as a disappointment. That said, however little stimulation I anticipated was too much. The end result was goofy at best and absurd and amateurish at worst.

If forced to choose one word to label Beneath, “clumsy” would first come to mind. “Stupid” would follow pretty closely, but “clumsy” races to the forefront in this jerky, awkward flick.

We sense this from literally minute one of Beneath as we follow Christy’s past in flashback. The scene in which Vanessa allows 14-year-old Christy to drive may well be the dumbest movie event I’ve seen in years. Not only does it seem completely idiotic for Vanessa to grant Christy’s wish, but also it comes across as what it is: a moronic plot event with no reason to exist other than to create a contrived event. There are many more logical and less obvious ways to injure someone in a car crash. I know that the filmmakers wanted Christy to be the cause - even though that’s really irrelevant to the story – but there are lots of less ridiculous methods they could have used.

To be honest, Beneath feels like nothing more than a student film. It has the stink of youthful pretension and unfocused ambition all over it. This story could have worked in a much more successful manner, but director Dagen Merrill lacks the skill to make it fly.

This means that at no point does Beneath display any subtlety. It makes sure we see every little element that will become important and never allows any room for interpretation or dimensionality. Instead, we find lots of usual cheap scares and obvious use of music for emphasis. There’s not a single unexpected moment to be found in this stinker.

Shrek The Third (2007)

Synopsis

In the third installment of the wildly popular SHREK series of computer-animated movies, everyone's favorite hygienically challenged green ogre (voiced by Mike Myers) faces both parental and royal responsibility when his wife, Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), finds out that she is pregnant and that her father, King Harold (John Cleese), is on his death bed. The shock of these revelations leads Shrek on a journey with his loyal companions Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) to seek out another heir to the throne--an awkward young boy named Artie Pendragon (Justin Timberlake). Waiting in the wings is the scheming Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), who sees the perfect opportunity to make his own bid for power and rallies a villainous crew to attack the castle.

Taking over the reins from director Andrew Adamson, Raman Hui and Chris Miller fill the land of Far, Far Away with even more fairy-tale characters in SHREK THE THIRD. Although this takes away from Shrek's own screen time, it introduces the highly amusing Princess Squad--which includes Snow White (Amy Poehler) and Cinderella (Amy Sedaris)--and the bullying Lancelot (John Krasinski), among others. And, as always, this SHREK outing features many pop-culture references, even managing to nod to two horror films (THE EXORCIST and ROSEMARY’S BABY) in a single shot. The movie also allows for more hilarious interplay between Donkey and Puss in Boots, resulting in a comedic adventure tale that, while over-populated, is still undeniably entertaining.

Blades of Glory (2007)

Synopsis

Two comedic heavy hitters, Will Ferrell (ANCHORMAN: THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY) and Jon Heder (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE), join forces to push the boundaries of slapstick with their ice-skating farce, BLADES OF GLORY. Rival skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Heder) begrudgingly set out to attempt a historical comeback in the pair-skating program after being banned in the men’s figure skating category after an unsportsmanlike scuffle. MacElroy’s former coach (Craig T. Nelson) provides them with the tough-love coaching they so desperately need. Despite their absurdity, the duo aren’t previous award winners for nothing, and their combined talent threatens the position of fellow American skating champions--brother and sister pair-skating team Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg, who are played by real-life husband and wife Will Arnett (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT) and Amy Poehler (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE). But while Stranz and Fairchild Van Waldenberg may turn on the charm for their adoring public, they reveal their true colors as they connive to sabotage Michaels and MacElroy in their efforts to regain the championship.

Ferrell's turn as the loud-talking, ego-swelling, hard-partying sex-addict skater is an abrasive and shrilling contrast to Heder’s innocent, cherub-faced prodigal son. Poehler and Arnett are splendid as the biting antagonists, and demonstrate a masterful understanding of how to portray characters full of spite and self-indulgence. BLADES OF GLORY is full of gut-busting wisecracks and painfully funny imagery, and will undoubtedly leave fans hoping that Ferrell and Heder will team up again for more hilarity and outlandish entertainment.

Stir of Echoes: The Homecoming

Synopsis

This is yet another unnecessary sequel to a film that was released nearly a decade ago. Studios now aren’t just delivering remakes to mainstream audiences, but they’re also polluting the genre by revisiting old and forgotten releases that never needed a sequel to begin with. When this project was first announced a couple years back, it was originally going to be a continuation of the first film, this time following the son of Kevin Bacon’s character, who’s now a senior in high school and begins to have visions like his father once did. After that idea was scrapped, a couple new writers came on board, and eventually settled on another story. So, in this film we start off with Rob Lowe’s character – a National Guard captain stationed somewhere in Iraq, who orders to fire on a mysterious van that’s speeding towards the military zone. After the van catches fire and explodes, the captain realizes that the charred corpses inside are a family of civilians. Before he can access the situation, a group of terrorists attack and he’s knocked out by a nearby RPG. After waking up a couple weeks later in a military hospital, he’s sent home. The mind games begin immediately upon his return, as he’s constantly plagued by visions of the burnt corpses of the family. Is it all in his head or is he really seeing the spirits of the dead? The movie wastes no time in playing with our heads, as we witness the captain continuously see things that aren’t real (like someone shooting themself in the head, only to show up minutes later alive and well). This leads us to constantly be questioning whether what we’re seeing is really happening or not, and it gets old pretty fast. The story finally begins to go somewhere when the captain receives the name of an unknown man, who can supposedly help explain what’s happening to him. At this point it's revealed that he’s receiving these visions, because the spirit(s) wants him to do something, and until he finds out what it wants, the visions will get worse and worse, until it possibly kills him and his family. In other words, we’re watching the first film all over again, only this time the story is not as smart, nor as scary. Throw in some political undertones and we’ve got Stir of Echoes: The Homecoming. To top things off, we’re given a poorly written and predictable climax. I can see why it premiered on the Sci-Fi channel before going straight to DVD. Poor Rob Lowe. I didn’t catch this film when it aired on TV, so I couldn’t say whether anything was added the DVD release, but considering there’s not much as far as gore goes (or language for that matter), likely not much has changed. Being a big fan of the first film, I saw this flick with an open mind, and was still painfully disappointed that such a bad movie would even bare the same name.

P2 (2007)

Synopsis

Alexandre Aja is certainly making a name for himself in the horror genre. Debuting with the flawed, but gory French slasher High Tension, then topping it with the surprisingly good Hill Have Eyes remake, and now taking over writing duties for a simple film entitled P2. With actor-turned-director Franck Khalfoun (Jimmy in High Tension) at the helm, we're given an old-school game of cat-and-mouse with essentially only two lead characters. Obviously character driven, the movie also delivered in terms of gore, which was a pleasant surprise, as I was expected nothing more than an edgy thriller.

The film debuted with mixed reviews and horrible box office totals, only making $2-million out of its $8-million budget. It makes sense, in a way, considering a movie like this is hard to market, since it really has no audience. It's rated R and doesn't have enough to appeal to a younger audience, and older viewers may find the thin premise a bit uninspiring. Regardless of the slack the film has received, I personally liked it. It took a while to kick in, but when it did I was glued to the screen, especially when it came down to the deaths.

The premise can't get any simpler than this -- a woman working late attempts to make it to her sister's in time for Christmas, but fails to even leave the parking garage when her car won’t start. A nearby security guard offers some assistance, but obviously has no intention of actually getting it working again. It doesn't take long before the woman finds herself chained to a table and spends the rest of the night trying to escape the guard and his vicious canine. Like I said before, the movie really doesn't pick up until 25/30-minutes in, after they've established some character development and the guard reveals his misguided feelings towards the woman. After that it's pretty much just a lengthy escape, with a couple dead co-workers thrown into the mix.

The movie offered some decent tension, but left behind a couple plot-holes. Although a lot of bases were covered that took care of how difficult it was for the woman to escape, there were still a couple ways left over that I felt they might've missed. Just a couple minor details that I suppose can be overlooked. On another note, Wes Bentley is a decent actor, but he just wasn't believable as the crazy security guard, and even left me laughing at his numerous outbursts towards the woman. Was that supposed to be creepy? I just saw the character as some lonely weirdo and not some psycho killer that'd stop at nothing to get what he wants, which was what they seemed to be going for. Either way, I still liked the movie, and regardless of the box office numbers, it'll still make its money back in DVD sales.

Return to House on Haunted Hill (2007)

Synopsis

There was once a time when I actually thought a sequel to 1999's House on Haunted Hill would be a good idea. What the hell was I thinking? Sure I enjoyed the first film, but a sequel would be entirely unnecessary. Sadly, we got one anyway. So what reason could more fools have to go into this damned house? Well, this time instead of just staying the night in hopes of winning lots of money, we have a couple groups of people looking for this mysterious ancient relic that's supposedly worth millions to collectors. Then there's Amanda Righetti's character "Ariel Wolfe" who’s supposed to be the sister of Ali Larter's character from the first film, which is pretty much our only tie-in (aside from the house of course) of the two movies. Naturally Ali is too busy and has more sense to even make a cameo appearance in this project, but Jeffrey Combs returns as the good Doctor, only this time less creepy. From what I can remember they make no mention on the outcome of Taye Digg's character.

I'm not sure if it was the intention of the filmmakers or not, but the house is pretty much different inside and out, almost making it completely pointless, as it doesn't have the appearance of the same haunted Asylum. I was able to catch the film on Blu-ray disc and chose to view it with its gimmicky 'chose your own story' setting, where we're given the option to have certain characters do things that supposedly result in changes to their fates or the story itself. After playing around with it for a while, I came to the conclusion that it was pretty much a waste of time. Sure it was kind of fun choosing whether they should answer a phone or not (rolls eyes), but aside from a few choices, these options didn't really deliver anything substantially different. The biggest affect on the plot occurred when I chose one character not to save someone, which immediately resulted in a domino effect with everyone dying, with 30-minutes still left in the reported running time. Interesting to say the least.

Another choice led to a go-nowhere subplot of one of the guys planning to double-cross his boss, but as a result would be given a shorter death scene. If I chose otherwise, I'd get the full death scene, which is shown in the original director's version. Speaking of which, I took a look at the director's take on the film and it's really not much different than the one you get to choose. Aside from shorter deaths and a pointless sub-plot, everything stays intact. However, your own version can led to alternate endings (one of which I revealed above). I personally liked the neutral ending more than the "bad" and "good" ending. As far as the choices go, my favorite had to be during the lesbian scene, where one of the female hired guns and two hot and very naked female ghosts are making out. After a minute passes we're given the option for her to succumb or resists their advances. Hmmm.. gee, that's a toughie, lemme think about that one...

Anyway, there's one thing that this movie does improve on compared to the first and that's the gore -- we've got a buckets of blood and some decent amount of guts, but of course, this movie has to weigh the good with the bad, and deliver a lot of horrible CGI blood. Why!? Why must a perfectly good death scene be ruined by ridiculously-fake computer generated blood!? The movie also obviously has a lot of nudity, which seems to be only key to keeping the male viewers watching. The first flick was good and actually had some pretty creepy scenes, where-as this movie is essentially just a supernatural slasher, as these people are just killed in different ways with really very little meaning behind it. However, we do get a little more reason as to why these ghosts are stuck haunting the house. We're also shown some new ghosts, which sadly still aren't much of an improvement for the film.

Synopsis

In director Brett Ratner's RUSH HOUR 3, African-American cop James Carter (Chris Tucker) once again reunites with Chinese inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) to both taunt and battle bad guys. Whereas the first movie was on Carter's turf, and the second was set in Lee's homeland, this outing finds both Carter and Lee out of their element in Paris, dealing not only with criminals, but also with the quirks of French culture. Along the way, Lee must confront his old friend Kenji (Hiroyuki Sanada) in order to save the day.

Fresh off of his highly successful (though critically maligned) "threequel" X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, Ratner tackles the third chapter of his own popular series, which follows the second movie by six years. Once again, Tucker provides the wisecracks, while Chan, who tones down the acrobatics, remains the emotional center of the franchise. Though Sanada (SUNSHINE, RINGU) and Von Sydow (MINORITY REPORT, THE SEVENTH SEAL) add a bit of gravitas to the film, and Polanski amuses with his rare acting appearance, RUSH HOUR 3 isn't quite as quick on its feet as previous installments, but it still provides plenty of slapstick comedy and relatively light action sequences, making it most readily appealing to teens.

Resident Evil Extinction (2007)

Synopsis

Years after the Raccoon City disaster, the T-Virus escaped and now spreading through the ground and threatens every human being undead, the Umbrella Corporation was unable to contain it. The virus spread all over the country infecting majority of the population and almost every living creatures become zombie, and the world itself is near on extinction. It appears that the Umbrella Corporation is the only organized society of living humans left in the world.

On the other hand, Alice, the Umbrella's greatest Bio-Organic Weapon, is now alone in the desert, struggling to survive and bring down the Umbrella Corporation lead by Albert Wesker and head researcher Dr. Isaacs. During her travel in the Nevada desert she once again join the forces with Carlos Olivera, along with new survivors Claire, Nurse Betty, K-Mart. Together they will try to eliminate the deadly virus that transform human into zombie.

Umbrella Corporation tried to locate Alice by using her psionic powers. Dr. Isaacs defies Wesker's direct orders and create a new super zombies transported to convoy's destination. While the forces of Alice is continuing to battle with the zombie's, the Umbrella staff sees Alice in the position and attempt to shutdown her but she resist and destroys the CPU on Umbrella's tracking Satellite.

Isaacs group tried to get Alice but he was accidentally bites by the zombie. On Umbrella's station after returning from the failed mission to get Alice, Issac was arrested and lock on his lab. Captain Slater was ordered by Wester to liquidate Issacs but when he is going to kill him on his lab he find him injecting himself with masses of the Anti virus. However, the effect on Isaac was opposite, he started to mutate and become tyrant. He kills all the employee in the facility.

The White Queens manages to trap Isaac and tells Alice that she must pass through lower level to create a cure for the infection, which her blood can do. Passing through the lower level she sees her clone in a vegetative state. While examining her clone Isaacs interrupts and attack Alice but she stabs him with a knife.

The clone then awakens and looks dying in Alice's arm so she covers it with her coat and leaves to kill Isaacs. Their battle happens in replica of Spencer Mansion, fighting using both telekinesis powers. The battle ended in a replica of the laser room and Isaacs was cut into pieces after the lasers has been activated. Alice is about to cut into pieces also when the lasers suddenly disappear.

At Tokyo, Japan, Wesker is having a meeting with the board of Umbrella and tells them that the North American branch has been lost, and he will now control further scientific experimentation from Japan. By using holographic technology Alice appear at the meeting and told them that she and her friends are coming for them now. Alice is standing besides with her clones when they stumble onto the rows of pods containing her other clones and the film ends.

Synopsis

This film was directed by director Michael Bay. The film begins with Optimus Prime explaining Cybertron's destruction at the hands of Megatron, and his quest to obtain the Allspark. Megatron discovers the Allspark on Earth, but crash-lands in the Arctic Circle, becoming frozen in the ice. Captain Archibald Witwicky and his crew of explorers stumble upon Megatron's body in 1897. Megatron's navigational system is activated by Captain Witwicky, and Archibald's eye glasses are imprinted with the Allspark's coordinates. Sector 7, a secret United States government organization, discovers the Allspark and builds the Hoover Dam around it to mask the energy signal. The still-frozen Megatron is moved into this facility, and is reverse engineered to further advance human technology. In the present day, the rest of the Decepticons—Blackout, Frenzy, Barricade, Starscream, Scorponok, Bonecrusher and Devastator—have landed on Earth and assumed the disguise of Earth vehicles (except Scorponok, who keeps his scorpion-like alien form). Blackout and Scorponok attack a U.S. military base in Qatar and try to hack into the military database to find where Megatron and the Allspark are, but fail when the network is manually shut down. While Blackout destroys the rest of the base, Scorponok chases a small group of survivors, but is eventually repelled. After their failure, Frenzy infiltrates Air Force One to hack again into the military database. He finds the map imprinted on Captain Witwicky's glasses, which his descendant Sam intends to sell on eBay for money. Frenzy and Barricade begin tracking Sam's location. The Autonomous Robotic Organism (shortened to "Autobot") Bumblebee is also on Earth, disguised as a 1976 Chevrolet Camaro, and looking for Sam. Sam buys Bumblebee, who then helps him try to woo his crush, Mikaela Banes; Sam does not know that Bumblebee is an alien until he sees Bumblebee transform and send a homing signal to the rest of the Autobots. While Sam flees from his autonomous car, Barricade confronts him and demands Archibald's spectacles. Bumblebee, who is following Sam, transforms and defeats Barricade. Mikaela, who is also following Sam, is caught in the crossfire, and leaves with Sam and Bumblebee to rendezvous with the rest of the Autobots. The Autobots—Optimus Prime, Jazz, Ironhide, and Ratchet—land on Earth and take on the forms of Earth vehicles. Sam, Mikaela, and the Autobots return to Sam's home to retrieve the glasses. Although the Autobots manage to get the glasses, agents from Sector 7 arrive and capture Sam, Mikaela and Bumblebee. Frenzy, disguised as a cellphone, secretly accompanies the group to the Hoover Dam and releases Megatron from suspended animation. Locating the Allspark, he sends an alert to the other Decepticons. Megatron escapes and Sam convinces the Sector 7 agents to release Bumblebee so that he can get the Allspark to Optimus Prime. The Decepticons chase the Autobots, who now possess the Allspark, into Mission City. An ensuing battle results in casualties for both sides: Optimus Prime kills Bonecrusher, Frenzy accidentally decapitates himself, Megatron kills Jazz, and both the Autobots and the military take down Devastator and Blackout. The battle ends with Sam killing Megatron when he rams the Allspark into Megatron's chest. Optimus expresses his gratitude to the humans and takes a fragment of the Allspark from Megatron's corpse. Bumblebee decides to remain with Sam. With the Allspark destroyed, Optimus knows that Cybertron cannot be restored, and sends a signal to any other surviving Autobots in the universe, directing them to Earth. The dead Decepticons are dumped into the Laurentian Abyss. The Secretary of Defense orders the termination of Sector 7. Starscream, the only confirmed surviving Decepticon, flies into space. A sequel is expected for release on June 26, 2009.

Synopsis

The Sushi Restaurant Association of Kuala Lumpur is organizing their annual underground Sumo tournament. Boleh Sushi, a small sushi joint and last year’s runners-up, are short one fighter after losing their cook, Hassan. They have to find a replacement soon. They accidentally find Ramlee.What would happen if a hotheaded and unambitious Malay man (Ramlee) was forced to enter the rigourous and challenging world of sumo? Would he give up on the trials and tribulations he finds himself committed to? Or will his relationship with the father-figure he never had create a purpose for him to rise above the challenges and endeavour to do his best?

Ramlee (Afdlin Shauki) is a down and out Malay boy who can’t seem to hold down a job, much to his mother’s (Kartina Aziz) disappointment. Out of a job and out of money, he stumbles across a challenge by sushi restaurant owner Honda (Patrick Teoh) to “eat all you can for free food – within a time limit”.

Hungry and desperate, Ramlee attempts the challenge, and fails. In compensation, Honda lets Ramlee take a job at the restaurant to pay off his due. Ramlee becomes a member of the Boleh Sushi shop staff, along with Haris (Awie) and Andy (Radhi Khalid). Ramlee is immediately attracted to Honda’s beautiful daughter, Siti (Inthira Charoenpura), who is half-Japanese and half-Malay. He begins to learn the meaning of having good work, good friends and family.One day he learns that part of his obligation is to take part in the Malaysian Sushi Association Amateur Sumo Wrestling Championships held by the local Japanese owners of sushi restaurants.Whilst taking part in the initial friendly bout, Akira (Gurmit Singh), Siti’s ex-boyfriend, humiliates him in public. It is only after that that Ramlee finds out that he had been tricked into working for Boleh Sushi because Honda was desperate for a third member for their team.Ramlee has to make a choice – whether to stay on and fight for Boleh Sushi in the upcoming Championships, or to give up on his new-found family. He decides to step up to the challenge and begins training with the boys for the big fight.

He learns the meaning of the word “nokotta” – never give up, the fight is not yet won. He learns that no matter what the result, the honour is in fighting the good fight. Ultimately, Ramlee’s challenge is to let go of the excuses he has made for himself, and to fight till the end, no matter what.

Synopsis

Lonely New York Traffic Enforcement Agent Chris finds an invitation to a mysterious Halloween party taking place across town in the warehouse district. Rather than spend the night at home with only his cat, Sir Lancelot, too keep him company he decides to live a little on Halloween night and attend this party. Clad in his homemade cardboard knight’s costume, Chris ends up the unsuspecting guest of honor at the Murder Party. He’s tied up and tortured by a collective of pompous art students intent on turning his death into an art installation.

Eager to appease the tastes of their bourgeois benefactor Alexander our ensemble of suffering artistes get more wasted and the implements of artistic slaughter come out. Immediately they experience an accidental set back and as their own insecurities emerge they start turning on each other. Everyone dies in Jeremy Saulnier’s blood-soaked and sharp-witted dark horror/comedy Murder Party, ending in a bloodbath which literally gives the axe to the pompous New York art scene, while offering commentary about the rise and fall of society on the whole.

Murder Party proves that horror films can be intelligent and being horrific does not always mean that blood and guts have to fly. Anchoring on strong and sharp dialogue through most of the film Saulnier’s script exposes the irony and ugliness of the New York art scene, any art scene, and society as a whole for that matter. What we see is an aspect of society and a culture of one-upmanship that is ultimately hypocritical as success is beaten down. Whether speaking about a microcosm of society, in this case the art scene specifically, or, of a society in general that encourages creativity and social commentary only to tear it down when someone rises above the crowd with a singular voice or talent, Saulnier’s film speaks to the individual and the whole. When our collective of artists inject truth serum at the bequest of Alexander we begin to see that even inside their own group there rages a jealousy and hatred towards one of their own because he is more talented than the rest. And as their insecurities are exposed the only way they know to level the playing field is to tear down the esteem of one of their own. Then does the retaliation and resulting blunt force trauma begin and conclude with a blood soaked finale.

Chris, our unfortunate victim turned accidental hero is witness to this rapid degrading. Seizing moments as they present themselves he desperately tries to flee his captors at any opportunity. These moments are comically inspiring and display the sharp wit of Saulnier’s script. Chris is not really a hero. He’s just a simple guy caught up in a bad situation. When he gets his chance does he right the wrongs? Nope. He runs. Hell, he’s not a hero. He’s a guy who lives a low-key life who for once decided to live it up a little and got himself caught in this social breakdown. Only at the end of the film does that silver duct tape on his cardboard knight’s costume shine a little brighter and he brandishes that electric chainsaw, his Excalibur, and dispenses a little Arthurian justice on his pursuer. He didn’t care about the inner bickering of these supposedly social elite. He didn’t want to know who the better artist was and who would get Alexander’s grant money. He just wanted to party. And perhaps Chris should be held in higher regard than his pompous captors as even high culture and social standing couldn’t stop them from killing each other.

Murder Party will please both the intellectual and the blood hound, knocking one down a couple pegs and challenging the other to rise up. And perhaps the challenge there is for everyone to stand on equal ground. Also, did anyone catch the irony that it was video game in the end that stood out as the key influence to our rampaging killer? Isn’t it ironic in the sense that I wouldn’t think that a hoity-toity artist would think highly of the influence of a video game, of popular media, over art? Is it ironic that our killer wasn’t citing poetry, text, or humming Wagner symphonies while bludgeoning painted nude models? Instead he was quoting lines audible during game play. How would the art scene in New York feel about that?

30 Days Of Night

Synopsis
Similar to the trembling refuges of Barrow, Alaska as portrayed in the film, horror fans have been long waiting in a state of uncertainty about “30 Days of Night”. Rarely has an anticipated genre film such as this had as many apparent plusses as obvious red flags. On the plus side, the source material is a highly acclaimed comic book series from horror icon, writer Steve Niles. On the negative side, the star is Josh Hartnett, who has never improved any project he’s been associated with. Likewise, promising newcomer David Slade, of “Hard Candy” fame, directed the film but Sam Raimi’s production company, Ghost House Pictures, which has yet to prove itself in any meaningful way to horror fans, (which, granted, is still relatively new,) put the film together. Well, those fans can breath a sigh of relief, as “30 Days of Night” is one of the most solid cinematic bloodbaths in quite some time.

Another major check on the plus side of the film is its novel concept, kind of an “Insomnia” in reverse, with vampires. The story takes place in the perpetually frozen town of Barrow, Alaska, a completely secluded slow-capped town that annually must endure a month of solid darkness. Upon the eve of this extended sundown, most of the town’s families take the last plane out, leaving behind only 158 individuals to keep the place alive. But come sundown, the horde of vamps who descend upon Barrow have opposite plans for its citizens. Dressed in bloodied suits of black and white, these vampires are all business as they prowl the dark town like drearily determined Black Friday shoppers, their insatiable feeding frenzy fueled by their determination and sense of entitlement.

The local sheriff, played by Hartnett, and his small, well-bundled band of family members and co-workers are all that stand to pathetically oppose the invaders. The unfortunate reality of this situation is that the humans do not stand a chance against the vamps, so logically, they spend most of the time hiding in silence. It is this element that sets this film apart from most every other vampire film, in that it is essentially a survival tale. As far as the horror genre is concerned, this film has more in common with zombie films such as “Dawn of the Dead” than your garden variety “Dracula” adaptation. Lots of gore, plenty of blood, and purely apocalyptic. Only, unlike the zombies of Romero, these antagonists are completely unsympathetic characters in their evil deeds, emphasized by the film’s first half hour, in which preparatory evidence of this premeditated attack (all communication and means of escape are cut off) baffles the locals in this typically quiet town.

In terms of vampiric cannon, “30 Days of Night” has its cake and eats it too. Without explanation, certain traditional rules apply while others are disregarded. Most obvious is the vampires’ fatal aversion to sunlight, which is what brings them to Barrow in the first place. But this sunlight weakness is directly related to the traditional vampiric aversion to the Christian iconography of the cross, which the film never acknowledges. Granted, Barrow is presented as a godless world of perpetual hopelessness, an idea further verified by the ghoulish lead vamp that at one point chillingly informs a panicking victim that there is no God. Perhaps that is enough to explain the film’s worldview to the audience, but it does not explain why the core characters, which do in fact come to refer to these creatures as vampires, with an understanding that they simply must wait out the thirty days until sunrise, never try pulling crosses or holy water on these guys. If “30 Days of Night” has a glaring weakness, this is it.

This is not to say that the film is ineffective – far from it. Director David Slade has crafted a unique horror film that will no doubt stand the test of time. The way his vampires prowl the rooftops in the backgrounds, often just out of focus, and sometimes opting not to strike, affirms his painstaking attention to visual detail. Slade’s ability to torture an audience in the best possible ways (as evidenced in “Hard Candy”) is put to great use, even in the face of some very blatant set-up and payoff sequences that would render a lesser film utterly predictable. Despite the noted presence of Hartnett as the leading man, the casting is 100% solid. This solidity is not immediately evident, as Hartnett is saddled with a few oddball stand-alone lines of dialogue, but soon he settles into a John Wayne-esque persona of a lone man with a code. He is surrounded by other broken and suffering individuals, an aspect of their lives made all the more pronounced by the sudden onslaught of horror that breaks Barrow’s sleepy spell. Even the subplot of a romantic relationship on the mend is not as trite as it seems.

“30 Days of Night” is a solid whole accentuated with visceral scenes of hardcore action and some absolutely terrifying moments. Thirty days may not be a long time under ordinary circumstances, but in this film, the characters and the audience alike feel the eternity it takes for the sun to rise. The only difference is that the audience ultimately is engrossed by the darkness and subsequent terror it brings. Here’s hoping that Slade and Raimi’s company are game to adapt the many sequel comic books that Niles and company have released over the years, maintaining and even transcending this level of quality craftsmanship.
